When a tidying or decluttering job beckons, have you wished for a Magic Wand?
It's BlogBoost time, and in a comment on Yesterday's post, Tamara asked, "do you have a magic ingredient to boost motivation?" The one that immediately came to mind was -
Magic wand tip #1:
Set a timer for 10-15 minutes, & do a '27 fling boogie!' (This is also a great way to motivate kids!)
Have the 3 Magic bins ready (toss/ recycle/ donate) and a small basket for things which belong in another area.
Quickly find 27 things to put in the bins.
When the timer goes off, decide if you're done, or if you want to keep going for a bit; remember, any progress is PROGRESS! (I may take a break, then set the timer again - or call it 'Done!' after 1 Boogie - depends on the day!)
Another option to the timer - set a stopwatch (i use an app on my phone), and time yourself on a task! I just put laundry in the wash, it took a minute and 38 seconds!
At the end of your session, dump trash and recycling, and put items in the basket away, give some finishing touches, and sweep. Viola, you've begun!
Last year, while preparing for my birthday party/ open house, I'd been in Rose Cottage 17 months, and the room needing the most attention was my Atelier/ Library/ music room.
I pulled out the 3 Magic Bins, and headed in.
- Tossed trash and recycling into bins as they surfacd.
- Took garden things to the greenhouse,
- Put music and books back on shelves...
- Bits and Bobs sorted, and items rehomed
- I'd allow 5-10 minutes at the end of the session, to sweep, and take trash and recycling to the outside bins.
Whew!
It took several days of 20-45 minute rounds, but was felt clear and spacious, and ready for guests! Though I like the tip that, while 'guest ready' is nice, 'ME ready' is better!
Do you have a favorite tip for getting Motivated?
I love me ready! Thanks for the reminder about the timer. I use Pomodoro - a free app with segments for 25 min *suggested max sitting then a 5 min break. But I hadn't thought about using it for the dreaded decluttering or reorganizing - Thank you Off to the closet to declutter.
ReplyDeleteYay!
DeleteI love using a timer (on my stove since I'm in a small house) for home care tasks!!
And isn't 'Me Ready' a great reminder - WE deserve a place we're comfortable in!

Great tips. I use the 3 magic bins a lot to declutter. I like adding the 27 challenge.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThe 27 Fling Boogie is a Fly Lady tip - I did quite a bit of childcare for my grands, and found the timer and a little 'fling boogie' helpful with them when it was pick up time!
I love the idea about the 3 bins for decluttering. I've started writing down three things I want to accomplish in my decluttering and when those are done, I add three more. By doing an area at a time, it seems easier for me and by checking of the three things shows I've accomplished my goals.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Martha!
DeleteAnd having 'bite size' goals (and ✔️ off!) feels so much more manageable than a big long list.
