Hobby Hopping

 I'm one of those folks who never stopped crafting, drawing and creating ...

I was the kid who drew in the borders of programs, and chose paint by number kits, then got blank canvases to use the leftover paint for my own creations! In grade school, I was asked to draw a camel for some Christmas art project. 

My mom took knitting to meetings, taught me to knit, crochet and sew, and took candle making and basket Weaving classes! We made dolls and did embroidery... after retiring, my dad learned to tie his own flies for fishing. My mother-in law Dorty and I learned to spin together when she was in her 60s (and she learned to knit, crochet and do needlepoint ...

I took a few Art classes in college, and later at our local Community College, and often doodle / sketch in meetings ....

I enjoy encouraging folks to access their own innate creativity and wisdom, so am drawn to teacher trainings with that emphasis. (Next up - SoulCollage®) I've lead a virtual creative circle the last 5 years, after having an active painting and teaching cycle for the previous 5 years. 

Realizing i have a neurospicy brain, i enjoyed seeing these great suggestions from Haley for trying new hobbies as they interest us! 

  • Choose something easy to try, and gather a few supplies
  • Set a 3 Session 'rule' - try something new several times first - don't despair because it's not 'perfect!'  And - resist the urge to go 'all in' (Ø get Loads of supplies for the latest *it* right away!)
  • Check - 'how does it make me feel?' (Sometimes we seek dopamine! Or we may just want to wind down)
  • Embrace Inconsistency - it's really OK to collect hobbies to choose from!
  • To that end - create a Hobby Menu of ones you already enjoy, and ones you want to try. 
Spirit Dollies
In the video comments, one crafter mentioned she gathers basic supplies for various crafts - & organizes them well enough she can easily pull one out, when the mood strikes! I realized, yes, I do that, too! 

Yesterday I thought of having made little 'handkerchief' ghost decorations with my friend Kate for a party long ago, and that wanted to craft some for my entrance.  
I found this strip of white cloth today while tidying, so cut it up, pulled out some dryer lint for stuffing (!) plus thread, and fishing line for hanging, and made a handful! (Plus one as a cat toy!)

    I love hobby hopping! In my younger years, I would take any old piece of denim clothing and turn it into teddy bears, hats, pocketbooks, and anything else I could come up with. I love crafting with my grands and great grands, every Christmas we make handmade gifts and they are made with love. My latest project is rock painting, I love your little ghosts, that gave me an idea to make Angels in a similar way.

    Fun to meet a Kindred spirit, Martha! We painted rocks at the vault camp last weekend (acrylic paint pens - SO fun!!)
    I've made little felt angel ornaments for a friends group got exchange - and one year food small paintings of angels!

    I do have a habit of finding new things to get interested in, but they aren't usually creative hobbies. It sounds like you are quite the artist and in so many ways. That's great!!

    I joined my mom in so many things she tried (and was good at): knitting, sewing, painting, crochet, "glass ritzen" - don't know the english name for that and at some point she made flowers with colorful materials that felt like a panty hose - oh the memories... I could use a little bit more time for creativity for sure!

      What lovely memories of creative time with your mom, Claudia!
      I treasure that as well - and picture melting wax for candles with her, and adding nubs of crayons for color!

    I can fully sense your creativity, so enjoy. Keep crafting, drawing, and creating for yourself and others. As for myself, I'm a content creator, and that's my hobby for now.

Be the Reason

  Today my friends Donna and Marvin invited me to join then on an road trip adventure, and we headed North to Hood River and the Harvest Fest! An Abundance of Produce It was a blustery, rainy day, but Multnomah falls was beautiful as always, and the weather cleared 'just in time' when we arrived in Hood River and the fest!  Rainy day - Columbia River  We had fun wandering, chatting, eating (I had a gluten free enchilada and corn on the cob, Donna had a braut with saurkraut and potato salad) and visiting.  There were many great vendors, and delightful mini conversations!  Business Card blessing And - so many smiles were exchanged!  They cost nothing, and are so appreciated!  More than once, we heard, " you made my day !" A Pinch of Salt

   In the fall of 2022 , I was sorting and paring down as I prepared to move across town to my daughter's, while Rose Cottage was built.  My daughter and son-in law helped a lot, but I still needed to make many tough decisions about what to keep and what to pass on! And I struggle with executive function - so it was challenging! Percy choose his basket  for the move Enter - Salt ! Between rounds of dethugging I found putting out little bowls of Salt ever so helpful! It does its work behind the scenes, whilst we're sleeping! My Feng Shui consultant and friend  Gwynne Warner  suggests sprinkling salt in the corners of rooms (where energy accumulates and can get 'stuck') , then sweeping it up the next day.
