A Pinch of Salt

In the fall of 2022, I was sorting and paring down as I prepared to move across town to my daughter's, while Rose Cottage was built.

My daughter and son-in law helped a lot, but I still needed to make many tough decisions about what to keep and what to pass on! And I struggle with executive function - so it was challenging!

Enter - Salt!
Between rounds of dethugging I found putting out little bowls of Salt ever so helpful! It does its work behind the scenes, whilst we're sleeping!

My Feng Shui consultant and friend Gwynne Warner suggests sprinkling salt in the corners of rooms (where energy accumulates and can get 'stuck'), then sweeping it up the next day. Another tip was to leave a crystal on a box or space you plan to sort overnight, and invite it to help you gain clarity on distributing the contents.

Atelier - packing up

Simple Shui consultant Amanda Gibby Peters feels Salt is, "an everyday, any situation cleanse.  You simply leave a small bowl of (sea or Himalayan) salt out for 24 hours. At 24 hours, dispose of it outside in the dirt or trash - whatever makes the most sense for you. You will feel brighter and lighter immediately."

In a multi level space, Amanda suggested placing a bowl on each floor. As I was clearing my two storey home, I often put a spoonful of salt in a small saucer downstairs, and another in a shell upstairs, then tipped them out the following day. This was especially helpful when I felt overwhelmed with the process!

Amanda writes, "You can't over-use this cure, just remember to dispose of the spent salt outside within 24 hours!"

Little saucer from Mexico
Now I use this little clay saucer, brought to me from Mexico. I sometimes put a few rose petals or sprigs of herbs with the salt.
In a recent post my blog-friend Saifrianna wrote about ways wild thyme can help with release!
  • Stay hydrated, especially while cleaning and purging! Take a pinch of salt before sipping water - this makes the cells more receptive!
  • If you practice Reiki or another energy modality, include those, and any affirmations as appropriate to the situation.
  • My cousins Gabriel's wife is from Africa, and when they are on holiday, she tosses little sprinkles of salt around the room, to clear residual energy of the last residents.

In my office, I plug in my salt lamp at the beginning of my day, and before leaving, I occasionally wipe it with a dry cloth, which I wash with my linens.

Other ways salt and other simple items can be used for clearing:

  • Dissolve a bit of salt in hot water, and use with your favorite natural cleaning agent to wash doors, surfaces and windows.
  • Feeling stuck on a project? Put a small bowl of salt on your desk before bed.
  • Add a bit of salt (or borax) to the laundry when washing clothes from thrift store, to clear predecessor energy.
  • I give the walls in my treatment room an occasional wash with a bit of salt and fresh herbs (Thyme, hyssop or lavender), or drop of essential oil in the water.
Do you have favorite ways to clear energy in your home or office?

  1. I have never heard of this method - so interesting. My problem with purging is less the deciding what keep, donate or toss, but to get going in the first place. Do you have a magic ingredient to boost motiavtion?

    1. Isn't it interesting?
I hear you on getting started!!
Magic wand #1: Set a timer for 10-15 minutes, & do a '27 fling boogie!'
Have the Magic 3 bins (toss/ recycle/ donate) and a small basket for things that belong in another area.
Find 27 things to put in the bins.
When the timer goes off, decide if you're done, or of you want to keep going for a bit (i may take a break, then set the timer again)
At the end, dump trash and recycling, and put things in the basket away.
For donate items, use a cardboard box or other 'donatable' container, and a system for moving them on!
      Good luck!

  3. This salt method is something I haven't heard of before. I can understand the frustration -- we did a major move to Kansas and I spent 6 months planning, purging and packing!

Morning friendly Space

In a recent podcast , Feng Shui maven Amanda Gibby Peters offers ways to set ourselves up for success in our endeavors by setting routines and areas that support them. Amanda often shares tips for boosting our homes positive energy - these are simple to implement - and you may already i n place!  Early in the year, many folks reevaluate what's working and what we'd like to improve and achieve in the year ahead. Our surroundings can support implementing these intentions.  Vision board -2025 Put your home to bed . I've written before,  that 'tidy folks' often take 'walk throughs' several times a day - putting things away, disposing trash, and tending little things that need doing. Doing the last walk through before bed helps set space for the day ahead, and streamline morning routines. Optimize your bedroom . Is it a dumping ground for extra things? Do you have a system for clothes that can be reworn? ( The 'floor-drobe' isn't the best option!)  ...

What is Soul Collage?

A day or so ago, my daughter asked, 'what is Soul Collage?' ... here's the elevator pitch: Soul Collage cards combine several images, usually from magazines and calendars, assembled and glued onto a card baking. We usually don't include words on the cards, inviting the image to inform is.  The size is either 5×7" or 5x8" - large enough for several images, small enough to work with easily.  When a card is finished, the creator uses several journal prompts to "meet" the cards, and to receive information and insights from the images we've chosen.  The cards represent different aspects of ourselves and of the community around us.  After making several cards, we can use them as we might any oracle deck, consulting or own inner wisdom. We can use them for daily inspiration, or random 'readings.' We can journal more when a card comes up ... In Soul Collage Evolving, founder Seena Frost writes, " The process of selecting images and maki...

Reset - Red Thread Circle

As a group of us prepare  to sift stagnant energy in  our homes, you're invited to set your intention for your space and a bit of Reset.  In our Intentional art community, we set intention in a Red Thread ceremony.  This is  a way to connect as a respectful, mutually supportive group, and begin to inter-weave the threads of our stories.  Red Thread circle The Red Thread has a profound capacity for connecting hearts and minds around what matters. When we face a challenge, we "tug on the Red Thread" as a reminder we aren't alone, and may tap into this web of support. Participants are invited to gather Red Thread, embroidery floss or ribbon, journal, and pour a cup of tea as we begin.    Can you imagine your space as a living Altar?  What is your intention for this cycle? What old stories do you tell yourself about your home? How will you reward your progress? What's your first action step? Take some time to journal on any of these inquir...
